Halko, Jasper Hauhtonen

The vase combines the striped surface of split logs with the random, organic shapes formed by fire. The shape of the vase is created by casting plaster into a fired and brushed wooden mold. The parts of the mold are tied together, and a fire is lit inside, in the manner of a log candle. The plaster mold, and thus the vase itself, reproduces the wooden mold’s surfaces in negative, capturing them with precision down to the finest details. 

The shape of each piece emerges through multiple firings of the wooden mold and the brushing of its charred surfaces. The impression of split wood is created as the fire consumes the softer springwood while leaving the harder summerwood prominently visible.
